Basement Cleanouts. Up the narrow stairs and onto the trailer.

Older homes in Petersburg, Ashland, and Jacksonville have basements with steep steps, low doorways, and a hundred years of things nobody wanted to carry back up. Our crew does the carrying. Wet boxes, the chest freezer, the furnace that got replaced, all of it up and out across Cass, Morgan, and Sangamon County.

Two ways to do it

The crew carries it up, or you fill a dumpster at the door.

The stairs decide this one. If the basement steps are steep and the freezer weighs more than you do, hire the crew. If it is mostly boxes and you have a walk-out or a wide stair, a 15 yard dumpster at the back door for a few days is the cheaper way to work through it.

What we take

Whatever went down there and never came back up.

  • Water-damaged boxes, rugs, and drywall
  • Chest freezers, dehumidifiers, and old water heaters
  • Furniture from the last three living rooms
  • Paneling, drop ceilings, and old carpet
  • Canning jars, crocks, and shelves of forgotten pantry
  • Workshop scraps, scrap lumber, and hand tools
  • Attic insulation bags, trunks, and holiday boxes
  • Sump pumps, furnaces, and duct pulled by your HVAC crew
We cannot take: paint, chemicals, fuel, oil tanks with oil in them, tires, and asbestos material

Old basements around Jacksonville sometimes hide an abandoned oil tank or a stack of asbestos floor tile, and those need a licensed hauler. We will tell you what we are seeing and who to call for that piece. Text a photo to (217) 624-7066 if you are not sure and we will tell you what to do with it.

Basement cleanout crews built for old stairs.

Searching basement cleanout near me will find plenty of haulers who are fine on a main floor and slow to commit once they see the stairs. L&J’s works in the older housing stock around Jacksonville, Petersburg, and Springfield every week, so tight turns and low headers are the normal job, not the exception. Flat rate from a photo, no surprise for the stairs.

How it works

Basement to trailer in four steps.

  1. 01

    Photo from the stairs

Take a picture from the top step and one of the staircase itself, then text both to (217) 624-7066. The stairs tell us how many hands to bring. Price back, usually the same day.

  2. 02

    Clear a path

Move anything you are keeping to one corner, or tape it off. If there is water down there, tell us and we come ready with bags and boots.

  3. 03

    We carry it up

Heavy items first while the crew is fresh: freezer, furnace, water heater. Then boxes and furniture. Everything goes straight to the trailer, nothing staged on your lawn.

  4. 04

    Swept and gone

We sweep the floor, haul off, and recycle the metal and appliances. If the attic is on the list, it comes down on the same visit.

FAQ

Basement and attic cleanout questions people ask.

How much does a basement cleanout cost in Central Illinois?

L&J’s Junk Removal prices a basement cleanout as a flat rate based on how full the space is and what is down there, with the stairs and the heavy appliances built into the number instead of added later. No hourly rate. Text a photo from the top of the stairs to (217) 624-7066 and you will have a price, usually the same day, or request an estimate online.

Who does basement cleanouts near Petersburg, Ashland, and Jacksonville, IL?

L&J’s Junk Removal handles basement cleanouts and attic cleanouts in Petersburg, Ashland, Jacksonville, Athens, Pleasant Plains, Springfield, and all of Cass, Morgan, and Sangamon County. Most of our work is in the older homes along Route 125 and Route 97, where a basement has stone walls and a staircase that turns. Call or text (217) 624-7066 to get scheduled.

Can you get a chest freezer or water heater up narrow basement stairs?

Yes. L&J’s brings a stair dolly, straps, and enough crew to get a chest freezer, water heater, or old furnace up a narrow turned staircase without gouging the walls. If a doorway is truly too tight, we take the appliance apart downstairs and carry it in pieces. Send a photo of the stairs with your estimate request so we bring the right setup.

Should I rent a dumpster or hire junk removal for a basement cleanout?

Hire L&J’s crew if the stairs are steep, the items are heavy, or the boxes are wet and you would rather not touch them. Rent a 15 yard dumpster from L&J’s if you have a walk-out or bulkhead door and want to carry up a few boxes a night over the week. Both are flat-rate. Text (217) 624-7066 and we will tell you honestly which one fits, or book the dumpster.

Do you do attic cleanouts too?

Yes. L&J’s Junk Removal runs an attic cleanout service across Cass, Morgan, and Sangamon County, whether it is a walk-up attic in a Jacksonville two-story or a scuttle hole with a pull-down ladder. We hand boxes, trunks, and bagged insulation down one at a time and load them straight to the trailer. Attic and basement on the same visit is common. Text (217) 624-7066 with photos of both.

Can you clean out a basement with water damage or mold?

Yes. L&J’s bags wet boxes, moldy carpet, and soft drywall downstairs before carrying anything up, so the mess stays contained. We wear masks and gloves and haul it off with everything else. What we do not do is remediation or drying, so if the walls are still wet, get that handled first and we clear the contents. Text photos to (217) 624-7066 to talk it through.

How long does a basement cleanout take?

A typical basement cleanout L&J’s runs in Springfield or Jacksonville takes three to five hours with a crew of two or three. Old houses with a turned staircase, a freezer, and a full workshop can take a full day. Adding the attic usually adds a couple of hours. You get a realistic time with the estimate. Send photos for a free estimate or text (217) 624-7066.

What do you do with old furniture and appliances from a basement?

L&J’s Junk Removal recycles freezers, water heaters, furnaces, and scrap metal, donates furniture that is still dry and usable to thrift stores around Jacksonville and Springfield, and landfills only what is ruined. Water-damaged upholstered furniture cannot be donated, so it goes to the landfill. Nothing is left in your yard or at the curb. Ask about donation when you text (217) 624-7066.

Do I need to be home for a basement or attic cleanout?

No. Plenty of basement cleanouts L&J’s does for landlords and out-of-town owners happen with a key under the mat or a lockbox. Mark what stays, tell us where to enter, and we text photos of the empty basement when we finish. If there is a bulkhead door, we often never need to walk through the house at all. Set it up by texting (217) 624-7066.
